What Motivates YOU? Changing Your Perspective

Finish the sentence: "I work out because..." 

 

What is your "Why?" WHY do you make the choices that you do? Why do you work out? Why do you want to make healthy lifestyle changes? Everyone has a different "why" that is unique to their own personal goals and aspirations. Try to identify your "why" and recognize the driving force behind it - motivation. 

 

What truly motivates us? Why are some people more motivated to do certain things than others? Where does that motivation come from?

 

Attitude.

 

In my personal training certification class this week, we learned about the concept of motivation. There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic.

 

Intrinsic motivation is driven by internal factors and for the pure joy of the task.

 

Extrinsic motivation refers to any other driving source of motivation that comes from the outside world. Examples would be success, a good test grade, a promotion at work, etc.

 

We learned that very few of us are SOLELY intrinsically motivated. 

 

Why is this? When is the last time you did something just because you LOVE doing it?

 

ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING. When you change your perspective, you can truly love doing anything - if you set your mind to it. 

 

If you WANT to have a positive attitude about working out, eating healthy, living a healthy lifestyle - then you CAN! And you can truly love every second of it. Your thoughts dictate the direction of your life. Chances are, if you think positively about a task, you will enjoy doing it much more than if you are dreading every second of it. 

 

 

"If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right."

 

My dad's favorite quote is "If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right." When I was younger, I played competitive basketball for 10 years. I can remember spending hours and hours in the driveway shooting free throws with my dad. When I would begin to get discouraged and allow negative thoughts to creep in to my mind, he would simply recite that very quote. This lesson has been so valuable to me as I move forward in my life and face new challenges. Attitude is EVERYTHING! If you're feeling discouraged as you work towards your fitness goals, change your perspective. Know that by choosing to live a healthy lifestyle, you are doing something good for YOURSELF! 

 

Time to get motivated!

 

Here are 5 reasons to look forward to your daily workout: 

 

 

1. IT BOOSTS YOUR MOOD

Working out makes you FEEL GOOD! Whether you have the time to grind out a 45 minute sweat session or a spare 10 minutes to squeeze in a simple, quick ab workout (Click HERE to view: TONE IT in 10: Abs) - Sticking to a regular exercise program boosts self confidence and leaves you feeling ready to conquer the world.

 

2. IT'S YOUR TIME

How often throughout your crazy day do you get the chance to spend time alone reflecting on your own thoughts? Taking the time to work on YOURSELF allows you to think about your goals, dreams, and the steps you are taking to reach them. Starting on an exercise program is a great way to embark on a journey towards self actualization and to get to know yourself.

 

3. THE MORE THE MERRIER

Invite your friends to join you for a workout one day. You'll be surprised at how much more you can accomplish when you have the support of others encouraging you along the way. Working out in groups of people or with a partner not only increases accountability, but it makes the workout a social event. 

 

4. YOU CAN EAT MORE

Yes, that's right... MORE! Fueling up post-workout may be one of my favorite things about the whole workout itself. Feeding your muscles is essential to seeing the results you're working for. So go ahead, fuel up, because you EARNED IT!

 

5. BECAUSE YOU CAN

If you find yourself struggling with motivation to get moving, remind yourself how lucky you are that you are ABLE to work out. You are healthy and capable, so why not put your abilities to use and break a sweat?
