Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate
Baby, it's cold outside! December is here and it's finally starting to feel like winter. The chilly weather we have been having lately is undoubtedly here to stay for awhile!
Hot chocolate is definitely a classic seasonal treat for this time of the year. But, you may want to rethink that Grande Hot Chocolate you order on the daily. One 16-ounce Hot Chocolate from Starbucks contains 400 calories, 16 grams of fat, and 43 grams of sugar. With all of the delicious food surrounding you at family gatherings and Christmas parties, why drink your calories when you could eat a slice of cheesecake for the same amount?
This Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate has only 40 calories, 3.0 grams of fat, and 0 grams of sugar. Not to mention, it is a single-serving size recipe that only requires 3 ingredients to make: natural unsweetened cocoa powder, stevia, and almond milk; however I added vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon because I wanted a little extra boost of flavor.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it is actually a superfood drink in disguise! On top of being packed with healthy fats and loaded with fiber (this Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate recipe has 3 grams of fiber!) natural unsweetened cocoa powder has multiple health benefits.
Natural unsweetened cocoa powder:

When eaten alone, natural unsweetened cocoa powder can taste VERY bitter, so it's important to add some form of sweetener. Agave, honey, and monk fruit are all great healthier options for adding sweetness to any baked good or beverage, but for this hot chocolate I chose zero-calorie stevia. Check out the recipe below!
- 1 tablespoon natural unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon sweetener (I used stevia)
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of cinnamon
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a microwaveable mug and heat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Remove from the microwave, stir, and check the temperature to make sure it's just right. Enjoy!
TIP: For an extra yummy topping, try adding some fat-free Reddi Wip (only 5 calories per serving) and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.
