7 Healthy Habits That Have Changed My Life

Last week I posted this photo on Instagram with 7 healthy habits that have changed my life and I wanted to write a full blog post about these to elaborate a little more - because I truly believe in the IMPORTANCE of your daily routine and how it contributes to your overall success and happiness.
This list is not extensive, and there are definitely other healthy habits that deserve a spot in the top 7 as well. But while I was writing the caption for the Instagram photo, these were the 7 that came to my mind for a few specific reasons:
1. All of these are things I do every day.
2. I have seen actual changes in my life as a result of these 7 habits.
3. These are easy habits that truly anyone can implement into their day.
Little changes add up to BIG results! Think about it as a staircase: each day, you climb a few stairs. Some days you may climb MORE stairs than other days, some days you may not climb any stairs at all, and some days you may even step down a few stairs. But in the end: it's the habit of continuing to move forward that will eventually put you at the top of the staircase. Making a conscious effort to implement small healthy habits into your day will ultimately add up to help you achieve a BIGGER goal in the long run.
7 Healthy Habits That Have Changed My Life
1. Sweating every day
No matter what I have planned for the day, I ALWAYS try to get in a good sweat session. Even if it is a short, high intensity workout because I am running low on time, I always just feel better when I have done some form of exercise during the day. Now, that's not to say I don't have rest days or days where I do not feel like going to the gym - because I definitely do! But incorporating movement of some type into my daily schedule is something that is very important to me. Exercise has so many benefits that I miss when I do not stick to a regular schedule, so even if I'm not going all out in a full-on lifting session, I will go for a jog or do some yoga as an "active rest day."

2. Eating AT LEAST one serving of veggies with every meal
THIS. This may be the habit that has changed my life the MOST! Before I made a healthy lifestyle change about 5 years ago, I rarely ate vegetables. Now, I have a vegetable with every meal - because they truly taste GOOD! There is nothing better than eating a fresh salad or some warm steamed veggies because they just feel so clean and whole. Once you make this a regular habit, it really is hard to stray away from.
3. Carrying a water bottle with me everywhere I go
Sometimes getting enough water throughout the day can be a struggle if you are always on the go or working and simply forget to stay hydrated. I never used to carry a water bottle and I found that I was not getting enough fluids to properly hydrate my body. Water helps with digestion, flushes out toxins, keeps your skin hydrated and plump (the list goes ON and ON. I could ramble about the health benefits of drinking a lot of water for hours). Carrying a water bottle with you at all times and sipping on it throughout the day is a great way to make sure you are staying up on your water intake. If you prefer something with a little more flavor, try adding some fresh or frozen fruit to your bottle to create a yummy fruit infused drink.
4. Never skipping breakfast
They call it "the most important meal of the day" for a reason! Eating a breakfast with a balance of healthy fats, complex carbs, and plenty of protein is essential to keeping you full and satisfied all morning long. I am always VERY hungry when I first wake up in the morning, so I have never been one to skip breakfast. I love starting my day with something sweet, so I go for a bowl of oatmeal with a protein shake or some protein pancakes and a side of fresh fruit. I also ALWAYS include a healthy fat - half an avocado or 2 tablespoons of nut butter are two of my faves to include on the side.
5. Making to-do lists
Sometimes it can be easy to get distracted by the many other tasks we have to do throughout the day. I know as a college student, making to-do lists has helped my productivity TREMENDOUSLY. I even like to schedule out specific time slots that I plan on working on things to make sure I stay on track and get everything done that needs to be completed. I prioritize by the due date, amount of time I think it will take me to finish, and the level of importance. For example:
7:00 - 9:00 : Homework
9:00 - 10:30 : Workout & Post-workout snack
10:30 - 11:30 : Write a blog post
And so on.
6. Taking time to express gratitude every day
Expressing gratitude has helped me keep a positive attitude no matter the circumstances. We all have "good" and "bad" days - but it's important to keep a positive attitude even on our "bad" days. For me, when I start to think negative thoughts, I like to run through a list in my head of all the things I am thankful to have in my life. Supportive family and friends, the opportunity to pursue an education, the ability to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle, etc. Remember: there is someone out there wishing for what you have or to be where you are!

7. Planning out the week ahead on Sunday
This is another productivity hack - especially since I started blogging. I always plan out all of my social media posts and blog content for the week on Sunday afternoon. This helps me stay organized, reduces stress during the week, and keeps my content on track. I know that once the week starts I will more than likely be busy with classes and homework and not have as much time to dedicate to blogging, so getting my media calendar laid out on Sunday is a habit that really helps me stay organized.
