Teeth Whitening Tips: My List of Simple Ways to Keep a Bright Smile

Okay, so first thing's first: I am slightly crazy about my pearly whites. But then again, who isn't? Seriously, in my opinion the whiter the better (glow in the dark maybe?)

This is one of the most FAQ topics I get from you guys. Your smile is the first thing people notice about you! It's important to feel confident showing off your teeth. When I meet someone for the first time, the last thing I want is to feel self conscious about my smile or even worse: to avoid smiling at all. Smiling is a way to connect with people - making eye contact, shaking someone's hand, and giving them a warm, genuine smile will take you SO far when it comes to first impressions. Like, SO far.

But professional whitening treatments can be costly, some can cause tooth sensitivity, and some are just flat out confusing to use. I have always been majorly proactive about keeping a white smile. Since I drink a lot of coffee and tea, I have always been slightly paranoid about my smile dulling over time.

That being said, there are SO many natural, simple hacks you can use to keep your smile brighter. But there are only so many, and they only go so far. I am going to share a few things I do every day as preventative measures to keep my smile bright, but first I HAVE to tell you all about Smile Brilliant.

Smile Brilliant is a professional, CUSTOM at home teeth whitening kit. All you have to do is create your molds in a simple 5 step process, mail them back to Smile Brilliant, and they will send you custom fit whitening trays that you can fill with their whitening gel and re-use for multiple treatments. I had always wanted custom whitening trays but I wasn't sure where to get them or how to get them without going to an actual dentist's office before I discovered Smile Brilliant.

There are also several little "life hacks" (as I like to call them) that I do every day to make sure my teeth are kept clean and white. These habits are all EASY things that you can do to prevent teeth staining and yellowing.

1. Drink your coffee and tea through a straw. DO IT NOW, THANK ME LATER.

Seriously this one is huge. Think about it: you take a GIANT drink of your black coffee and it hits the fronts of your teeth before it passes through to your mouth. If you compare this to pouring coffee in a white sink, you can VISIBLY see the coffee staining the white sink - and the same thing is happening to your teeth (yikes). By using a straw, you minimize the "impact time" of the coffee touching your pearly whites.

2. An apple a day keeps the stained teeth away.

But don't just eat your apple any way - actually bite in to it. When you bite in to an apple, your teeth act as a wedge to separate the fruit, which actually cleans your teeth as you bite. The fruit is high in water and it activates your saliva glands (ew, sorry for the description but it's true), getting rid of some of the bacteria in your mouth than can potentially dull your smile. I like to think of apples as the ultimate teeth whitening food. For some reason, every time I eat one I feel like I am being good to my teeth!

3. Drink LOADS of water

I have talked SO many times about all of the different health factors of drinking enough water, but I don't think I have ever really talked about the importance water plays in keeping your teeth bright. Make sure you drink frequently between bites of colored food and drink to rinse away any potentially staining agents that could be left over on your teeth. I am EXTRA paranoid about this with coffee - if I am out and about and want a coffee from Starbucks, I will refuse to get one unless I have a water bottle with me to rinse away the staining beverage as best as I can.

4. Chew gum

But make sure it is sugar free, and DON'T GO OVERBOARD! I am guilty of this - I am a total gum chewer. Chewing gum like Orbit White (my fave) that is sugar free can help keep your smile bright. My advice (from personal experience) is just make sure you don't chew too many pieces in a short amount of time, because it can lead to bloating and digestive discomfort.

5. Drink almond milk, cashew milk, and eat greek yogurt

AKA healthy sources of calcium: the mineral that not only strengthens, but also whitens your teeth. I listed almond milk, cashew milk, and greek yogurt because these are my favorite ways to get my calcium intake; but real dairy milk, cheese, etc. are also good calcium sources.

6. Use a simple, affordable whitening kit

Like Smile Brilliant. Like I said up above, this kit is my FAVE. So easy, quick, and attainable for the long run. You can enter to win a $139 credit on their website HERE.
