Cryotherapy at Bare Med Spa: What it is, How it Works, and Why it's Worth Trying

A few Saturdays ago was the first ever Bare Med Spa Ambassador Happy Hour! I was so excited to get to meet all of the other Bare Med Ambassadors from the Kansas City area. I always love actually meeting other bloggers in person at events. I feel like we already know each other from social media (in a weird way), so it is always great to actually meet one another in person. We laughed, got to know each other, ate tasty treats from Protein House KC (seriously the BEST protein shakes), and tried out cryotherapy.

Bare Med Spa’s downtown Kansas City location is beautiful. It is located right next to One Light Apartments if you are familiar with the area. When I first walked in to the spa for the event, I saw smiling familiar faces from all of my favorite KC bloggers and a GOURMET table of high protein healthy snacks from Protein House KC (I was sold at that point). I walked over to the table and sampled everything because I had been DYING to try Protein House. I literally love protein shakes because they taste like a milkshake or ice cream, so my favorite thing I tried was the Peanut Butter protein shake. I definitely recommend checking them out if you are in the area and craving something delicious and healthy.

After awhile of chatting, eating, and taking photos we decided it was time for the fun part: cryotherapy.

If you are like me and had never heard of cryotherapy until recently, you’re probably wondering what the treatment does, how it works, etc. I will be honest, at first I was nervous to try the treatment because I get cold SUPER easily. Fun fact: I actually have Reynaud’s Syndrome, a condition where my fingers and toes lose circulation and go numb at temperatures that are considered fairly mild (like - 50 degrees mild). So, if you see me bundled up and wearing gloves in 50 degree weather, now you know why.

But, I got a million and five questions (that is an exact number by the way) about cryo the last time I posted about it on my Instagram story, so I went ahead and tried a treatment because I wanted to be able to share about what it was like with you all!

So, first thing’s first: what is cryotherapy? Cryo actually kind of reminds me of the “ice bath” treatment used to treat sore muscles for athletes. In reality, the concept is fairly similar. The cryosauna (it kind of looks like a spaceship or something) uses extremely cold temperatures to tighten and firm the skin, aid in muscle recovery, improved blood circulation, an energy boost, and a higher metabolism. When you get in the sauna, you are enclosed from the neck down and surrounded by liquid nitrogen - giving the skin a nice little arctic blast. Because of the process your body must go through to heat itself back up after your treatment is over, you can burn around 800 calories by spending just 3 MINUTES in a cryotherapy treatment (miracle machine).

So, when I decided I was going to join in on the fun and hop in the cryosauna, I grabbed a robe, some long socks, and these rubber shoes that look like crocs and waited with the other ambassadors to jump right in.

The treatment itself is very brief. You can go for as long or as short as you want up to a total of 3 minutes. Since it was my first time trying it out (and I was already nervous) I decided to start off slow and try 1 minute. I was actually surprised at how your body adjusts to such an instant temperature change. I really didn’t feel that cold. I mean, don’t get me wrong I was definitely cold - but it was a good kind of cold.

After my minute had passed, the temperature of my skin had crept down to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Since I only went for 1 minute, my temperature was not as low as some of the other girls' temperatures.

After you start to warm up again, you really do notice a difference in the firmness and tightness of your skin. I usually always have a little bit of soreness in some muscle group, so I was interested to see what cryotherapy would do for my recovering muscles. I only did a one minute treatment and my entire body felt more relaxed and less tense. I can definitely see how longer treatments on a regular basis would do WONDERS for soreness in any area of the body.

I think it was definitely a general consensus among all of the bloggers at the event that the cryosauna was a hit. If you want to try cryo out for yourself, Bare Med Spa in Kansas City (the downtown location) has the BEST services in the metro. Tell them I sent you!
