How to Make Healthy Donuts | Chocolate Coconut Cake Frosted Protein Donut Recipe

Yes, you did read the title right. HEALTHY DONUTS!

 

This has been a heavily requested recipe - and not surprising, I mean who DOESN'T love donuts?!

 

I made a Sweet Cinnamon Cake Protein Donut recipe awhile back and it was super popular, so I figured I would make a frosted chocolate version. Chocolate glazed donuts are my absolute favorite, but they can run around 340 calories and have 17 grams of sugar each.

These healthy chocolate frosted donuts have just 125 calories EACH, only 4 grams of sugar, and pack 17.7 grams of protein! Talk about the perfect way to power up after a morning workout. I love these donuts because not only do they taste like chocolate cake, they are low in sugar and have the perfect amount of protein to act as a post-workout recovery treat.

These donuts are gluten free - thanks to one special ingredient: coconut flour. Coconut flour is one of my favorite substitutes to use when I bake healthy treats because 1. It's gluten free, and 2. It is SUPER high in fiber.

 

I always try to make these desserts without any added oils or sugars. A great substitute for oils when you are baking a cake-like treat is greek yogurt! It is high in protein, nonfat, and gives your dessert extra moisture and sweetness. I use Light & Fit's vanilla flavor because it is one of the brands that makes their greek yogurt lower in sugar than most.

 

Okay, so now that we have established what's in the donuts: let's talk about the FROSTING. I could literally eat this plain. Actually, I HAVE eaten this plain before. It only takes FOUR ingredients to make! The frosting is super fudgey, rich, and almost has a "whipped" texture. The frosting is included in the nutrition facts for this recipe. It is seriously so good!
