Here's Why Exercise Boosts Your Mood & Increases Your Energy Levels

March 9, 2018

The saying “you’re only one workout away from a good mood” is TRUE. Do you ever feel like you're "still asleep" before a morning workout or totally drained after a long day, but then you knock out a workout and immediately feel more energized? This may sound like the complete opposite effect you would expect from cranking out 30 burpees and maxing out on push-ups - but exercise can actually boost your mood and increase your energy levels.

If you're wondering where exactly this "post-workout buzz" comes from, here are a few causes:

1. Exercise releases dopamine and serotonin

Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters both partially responsible for the feeling of happiness, appetite, and even energy levels. Our bodies crave movement, and when we exercise the "feel good hormones" are released.

2. Exercise reduces stress

Regular exercise releases stress for the short-term AND makes you better at handling ongoing stress for the long-term. When we subject our bodies to various levels of exercise-induced stress, we raise our heart rate and experience a variety of hormonal changes. The more frequently we expose ourselves to the stress caused by exercise, the better our bodies will adapt and be able to handle stress in the other areas of our lives (check out this article on mindbodygreen).

3. Endorphins produced by the body during exercise help alleviate pain

Endorphins are a neurotransmitter produced to reduce the body's perception of stress and pain. When we exercise, our body responds by releasing endorphins. The result? A boost of energy, a feeling of happiness, better sleep, and more confidence.

4. Aerobic exercise will enhance the heart’s efficiency

An efficient heart will increase blood flow to the brain and make it easier to focus and concentrate. Next time you start feeling antsy, try taking a quick study or work break to get up and get moving with an aerobic workout like running, cycling, swimming, HIIT, or dancing.

5. You'll sleep better

Research has shown that exercise can reduce insomnia and improve your quality of sleep. Better sleep = more energy the next day.

This entire outfit is by Fabletics. Their workout clothes are my absolute favorite for several reasons:

2. They have the CUTEST patterns and colors. I love vibrant activewear and Fabletics definitely has it!

3. They even give you customized outfits based on your preferences you select when you sign up as A VIP.

4. QUALITY. This one is huge for me. I always look for activewear that is durable, comfortable, and stylish.
