DEBUNKED: 3 Myths About Spray Tans You Need To Stop Believing

May 10, 2018

I have to start this post by saying: I am a self-proclaimed spray tan enthusiast.

I almost ALWAYS have a spray tan. We know the many risks associated with using a tanning bed or laying out in the sun without sunscreen, and spray tanning serves as an alternate way to attain glowing, bronzed skin year round without having to put your health at risk.

If you are anything like me, you just LOVE having an even, bronzed glow. Between visits to Bare Med Spa for a full professional spray tan, I use St. Tropez's Dark Foaming Mousse and applicator mit to give myself an overnight tan. I use the dark shade, apply it with the self-application mit, leave it on overnight (about 6-7 hours) and rinse it off the next day. Typically St. Tropez tans last around 2 weeks before they have faded away completely. The dark shade has an olive undertone, so you don't have to worry about looking like a Cheeto or an Oompa Loompa. It also fades evenly and just gradually gets lighter, as opposed to some other self tanners I have tried that end up splotchy or streaky after two days.

So, St. Tropez serves as my quick fix, do-it-myself tanning solution. And it WORKS. I have been using this stuff for years and I even took it to the Bahamas with me for Miss Teen USA 2014. We were there for a full week and the competition wasn't until the end of the week, so St. Tropez was truly a lifesaver when it came to touching up the professional spray tan I had gotten before I left.

But, like I said above, when I am looking to get a deeper color and fuller coverage, I opt to have a pro do the job. For the past year, Bare Med Spa in Downtown Kansas City has been my go-to place to get a nice, even color before a photoshoot, an event, or even a vacation. Finding a spa that is going to pay attention to detail, match the color of the spray tan to your complexion, and give you guidance on caring for the tan is SO important in making sure your spray tan is a success.

Bare Med Spa is one of the only spas I trust to give me a spray tan - because we have all heard horror stories about spray tans gone wrong, am I right? Despite the growing popularity of spray tanning, there are still TONS of myths and common misconceptions that prevent people from getting a regular spray tan (or even trying one at all). Here are THREE MYTHS about spray tanning you need to stop believing.

1. If I get a spray tan, I will look orange.

FALSE. Not all spray tans are created equal. Usually if a spray tan appears "orange," it has too much DHA (Dihydroxyacetone, the ingredient that causes your skin to darken) for your skin to handle. This is why choosing a spa that cares about your results and pays attention to your specific needs is so important in a successful tan. Every time I have been in to Bare Med Spa for a spray tan, the first thing they ask me is, "How dark do you want to go?" so they can get an idea of how to adjust the solution according to my desired outcome.

2. Spray tans get splotchy and streaky after a few days.

FALSE. Splotchiness and streaks can be prevented by exfoliating thoroughly before you get your spray tan. It is important to make sure you have fresh skin free of dead skin cells, lotions, deodorants, makeup, etc. so the tan has a clean surface to be applied to. When I exfoliate and go in with clean, fresh skin, my spray tans from Bare Med Spa usually last around two weeks before they are completely faded.

3. I will smell like spray tan for the next week.

FALSE. Okay, yes, I will admit that INITIALLY there is a strong odor that comes along with getting a spray tan. It's just part of it. But once you have let the tan set for the designated time and have taken a shower, the smell will usually fade if not disappear completely. My number one tip for getting rid of the "spray tan smell" is to use a scented lotion right after you take your first shower. Using a daily moisturizer all over your body after you get a spray tan can also make it last longer.
