5 Things You Need to Know Before You Get Hair Extensions

September 18, 2018

Have you been on the fence about getting hair extensions? Whether you're searching for length, volume, or even a little bit of both - tape-in hair extensions are a great option to give your hair the makeover you're after.

For me personally, I wanted a boost of volume to my already pretty long hair, so I reached out to Posh KC Blow Dry Bar for their expertise. I had used a Halo extension piece before, but it was super inconvenient to have to re-place it every time I wanted to wear it. If you're not familiar with a Halo, it's a clear, thin line with hair attached at the bottom that goes on your head like a headband. It worked every once in awhile, but I needed an easier, more natural appearing way to get the volume I wanted.

Posh KC is the only Bellami Hair Extension ambassador in the Kansas City area. Bellami hair is the highest quality cuticle remy human hair (meaning it feels AND looks 100% real because it IS 100% real). They have tons of colors you can pick from to make sure your extensions match your current hair color.

When you go in for your consultation at Posh, they will help you pick your color and decide on the best length of extensions you should order. Since my hair is already pretty long, we went with the 22-inch hair so we would have a little wiggle room to trim it if needed. Bellami has 14, 16, 18, and 20-inch options to choose from too.

I was clueless about how they go about putting the tape-in extensions in, how to care for them, what to expect, how they would feel, etc. - but Posh is super helpful in answering any questions you may have about any part of the process. If you go in to Posh (they're located in Downtown Kansas City) mention my name and you can get $50 off your service! Here are five things you need to know before you get hair extensions of your own.

1. You can style them just like you would your normal hair.

You can blow dry, curl, straighten - you name it. You will want to make sure you keep all direct heat away from the tape tab to avoid melting the glue. When I am curling or straightening mine, I find the tab at my roots and keep my finger slightly below it to make sure I stay away from the place of connection. Just like with your normal hair, a heat protector is always a good idea to make sure you don't cause heat-related damage to the hair. The better you care for them, the longer they will last.

2. They won't damage your hair.

Some people are under the impression that all extensions damage your hair and can make it thinner or have more breakage. However, as long as you go to a salon that has a lot of experience and is well educated on the proper way to place the hair (like Posh KC), tape-in extensions will not cause damage to your real hair. While I was getting mine installed, I asked Posh about the possibility of damage and they explained that the important thing is to make sure stylist is taping the extensions to the right amount of your real hair to make sure it is secure.

3. You can wash them, but may want to use special shampoo and conditioner.

You won't want to wash your extensions every day, though. I was mine about 2-3 times a week and use a little bit of dry shampoo on off days. When you do wash them, you'll want to make sure you are using an alcohol-free shampoo and conditioner (otherwise you could remove the glue on the tape-in extensions). Posh KC has UNITE shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, and detangling spray that is safe to use on the Bellami extensions (not to mention, it smells amazing and leaves your hair feeling super soft). Another thing to note: you will NOT want to go to bed with wet hair. You'll wake up with a tangled MESS. I used to be one to go to sleep with wet hair, but now that I have the Bellami extensions I always blow dry it before I go to bed and sleep with my hair in a loose braid or low pony to keep it tamed.

4. They don't feel heavy.

This was one of the most frequent questions I got about the Bellami extensions. And I mean, it's understandable - you would think that adding that much hair to your head could feel a little on the heavy side. Everyone's tolerance level will be different, but I really only noticed a difference for the first few hours after I had mine installed. I got used to them VERY fast and they never hurt, itched, or pulled on my real hair. If you get your set installed and there are a few spots that are bothering you, Posh can adjust it to make them more comfortable for you. Once they grow out a bit, they are not as tight to your head and even less noticeable.

5. They last 8-10 months.

That's right. 8-10 MONTHS. That's a long time! The better you take care of your Bellami hairthe longer it will last. You will have to get them moved up about every 6-8 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows.
